Somatic therapy is a holistic, science-backed treatment for PTSD, depression, and anxiety

The body and the mind are connected. Your body holds on to the emotional pain and trauma that you experience —unless you learn how to release it. That is where somatic therapy comes into play.
Somatic therapy is a body-centered form of therapy that utilizes the mind-body connection to help you heal from anxiety, depression, and trauma. It teaches you how to release the pent-up emotions that become locked in your body and cause physical symptoms like pain, headaches, and gastrointestinal problems.

How Can Somatic Therapy Help Me?

Your inner emotions imprint on the central nervous system and affect the physical body. Emotional responses to trauma, emotional pain, and grief often become so automatic and familiar that we simply integrate the pain into our beings instead of separating from them. Without tools to develop the mind-body awareness needed to rewire the central nervous system, you simply remain in states of tension, anxiety, depression, and dysfunction. Somatic therapy explores the mind-body connection between things like anxiety, anger, depression, and trauma. It helps you free the emotions trapped within your body.
As a somatic therapist, I help you become more aware of the ways that your body manifests anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief. Through somatic therapy Santa Cruz, you will connect with the memories that are buried deep within your fibers that only your body remembers. During our sessions, you’ll learn to pay attention to your physical responses to anxiety, depression, and other emotions. Sensory-based techniques like vocalization, deep breathing and relaxation may be used to help you work through sadness, pain, and anger. You’ll develop an awareness of the ways your body retains and manifests emotional pain and trauma. This will allow you to release the negativity that prevents you from fearlessly, fully, and joyfully participating in life.

The Sounding Heart Approach to Somatic Therapy Santa Cruz

One of the hallmarks of the Sounding Heart approach is that we combine somatic therapy with sound healing and traditional psychotherapy. This allows you to escape the “amygdala hijack” trap that activates your fight-or-flight response when stress strikes. When you are constantly in a state of fight-or-flight, it can cause anxiety, anger, depression, and other strong emotions. Research shows that the amygdala actually relaxes when feelings are named. Once you learn how to calm the amygdala, you will begin to notice a shift that creates sensations of warmth and relaxation that weren’t there before.

Using vocal tones, you’ll be guided through a process of finally being able to name your repressed emotions. The result can feel like escaping a desert island of your own fears, guilt, and self-doubt. You will feel empowered to release pent-up negativity and tension that’s compromising your mental and physical health.

The Sounding Heart method will help you begin the shift from being fragmented to becoming whole —bringing your mind to a safe place where it can bring up unresolved and traumatic feelings and experiences. This will allow you to re-establish a connection with the “self” you were before your body’s coping responses began defining you.

Connecting your feelings with your true core self will help you feel comforted and powerful enough to begin regulating your own body and emotions. You can learn to operate as a “whole” person and become more self-accepting and forgiving, build resilience, find peace, and be your unique, whole self.
